On May 19, 2014, OGE's General Counsel, David J. Apol, met with Philippines Ombudsman, Conchita Carpio Morales. The Office of the Ombudsman, an independent accountability office, is the primary enforcement arm of the Philippines government in combating corruption. The General Counsel and the Ombudsman discussed the role of financial disclosure, training, and oversight in the prevention of corruption and the importance of ethical leadership to promote integrity in public service.
The Ombudsman's delegation is visiting the U.S. as part of a five-year, $14.7 million USAID project to reduce corruption and stimulate economic competition in the Philippines. At the request of agencies and entities of the U.S. Government, such as USAID, OGE discusses its role as a corruption-prevention organization and shares its ideas and experiences with foreign governments.
